Teaching Philosophy

As a teacher I aim to create a working ensemble where the students feel safe enough to take large risks. Working creatively in this environment also allows for cooperative learning and community building. Having a strong ensemble where the entire class is invested emotionally, physically and mentally encourages ownership of one’s own work and the group’s work as a whole.
I aim to instill practical theatre knowledge such as production and playwriting. Teaching all aspects of theatre, not just performance skills will improve their organizational skills, problem solving and analytical thinking. Not every student is an actor but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a place for his or her talent in the theatre classroom. Theatre embodies more than performance skills. The skills learned in a theater classroom will inspire leadership, as well as improve literacy and critical thinking skills. It is my goal to encourage each student to explore all aspects of theatre and instill a life-long passion and appreciation of the craft and experience.

For the Department of Education, I not only work with kids but also as a co-facilitator for city wide professional development. I've co-facilitated workshops on "How to Teach Playwriting" and recently on "Curriculum Mapping."
I've also developed curriculum that aligns with the common core for the department of education. Click here to see my unit on Puppetry.

Students Write for Broadway's Matilda
![Picture](/uploads/3/5/1/8/35186385/3824737.jpg)
Currently working with the Royal Shakespeare Company's WRITE HERE WRITE NOW with Matilda program. I am teaching students in the fourth grade, from PS 506 the School of Journalism and Technology, to write a scene and a song for Matilda The Musical.
The Broadway performers in Matilda will perform one of the selected scenes on the Shubert Stage, where Matilda is currently being performed. This special event in December will host the nine other schools involved in the project, along with their families and friends to see the students work come alive on the Broadway stage.

Directing Students on Broadway
|
I directed 3rd-5th grade students in Disney's The Jungle Book. The first scene from the musical was performed on Broadway at the Minskoff theater in 2013 in partnership with Disney Theatricals Musical's In Your School, program. The full production was then performed at P.S. 506 The School of Journalism and Technology.
Staging had to be adjusted for this performance. |

Devising Plays & Getting Published
![Picture](/uploads/3/5/1/8/35186385/7386688.jpg?136)
Children of Hooverville was first performed and written for 7th graders at MS 51 in Brooklyn, NY. It is now published with youthplays. Click here to get the rights.
Drama. 45-55 minutes. 3 males, 10 females (with opportunity to add up to 7 additional non-speaking roles; 13-20 performers possible). Suitable for middle school or older.
Children of Hooverville is set in 1936. It follows the journey of 13-year-old Elsie Davis, who has just lost her older brother in a dust storm and the family farm to the bank. She is forced to set off with her little sister Charlotte, their father, and friends Donald, Shirley and Edna McGee on an old jalopy from Oklahoma along route 66 to San Joaquin Valley, California. On the road the children face many hardships but when they arrive to California, they come to realize it’s not the promise land they had hoped for. Their struggles worsen as Charlotte is sick and there is no work to be found. Donald, trying to help fix the situation ends up making things worse. Elsie, having lost everything, wonders if it was all worth it in the end.
